BENEFITING: Back on My Feet

Khalid Itum

THE STORY:

My name is Khalid Itum and I am a serial entrepreneur, based in Washington, DC. In April, I ran the Boston Marathon in support of Back on My Feet, and with that, pledged to raise $7,200 to put four homeless people through an amazing, life-altering program -- that would help them get back on their feet in an unconventional manner.

I have 4 days to raise $3,600 more towards that goal. Will you please contribute $30? If only 120 people do so, I will meet my goal!!! And together, we'll have made a huge difference in two people's lives.

$30 helps the program provide a member with a shirt & shorts.
$50 provides the runner with a winter running uniform.
$100 covers a member's celebrations.
$250 covers the runner's race fees & incentives.
$500 provides for his/her education and employment assistance, as part of the program.
$1,000 covers a member's housing.
And $1,800 hosts a member in BoMF for a full year.

Founded in 2007, Back on My Feet is a nonprofit organization that promotes the self-sufficiency of those experiencing homelessness by engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem. Back on My Feet (BoMF) does not provide food nor does it provide shelter, but instead provides a community that embraces equality, respect, discipline, teamwork and leadership. All members -- regardless of race, education or socioeconomic status -- join together to move their own lives forward as well as the lives of their teammates.

BoMF is a 6-9 month program that works with individuals living in homeless facilities. Teams are formed at partner facilities, where the foundation of BoMF is laid through dedication to running. After 30 days in the program, each member who maintains 90% attendance moves to the Next Steps phase. Next Steps enables members to move towards self-sufficiency through educational and job training opportunities. Additionally, each member has the opportunity to earn $1,250 in financial aid to assist in their efforts toward self-sufficiency. The organization has received incredible media support, including attention from NBC Nightly News, ABC World News, CNN, and The Today Show for its ingenuity in tackling this difficult social issue.
