Thank you for visiting my fundraising page and supporting me on behalf of Imerman Angels. I am getting active with the Angels … so no one faces cancer alone LIKE I DID!!!!!!!
My name is Khit & I'm a 2X CANCER SURVIVOR!!!!!! :)))))) I was diagnosed with Vulvar Cancer at the age of 26 in 2007. I remember it like it was yesterday. I had noticed a skin color change in the form of several dark spots and was tested for HPV. The results came back to be a very high grade, high risk strands of HPV, and I was referred to an oncologist. He then did another biopsy and the results showed that I had developed Stage 1 Vulvar Cancer from certain strands of HPV. Within the month, I was scheduled for a partial vaginectomy, partial vulvectomy, leep/cone biopsy and a D&C. I was so scared, and I had no one to talk to. I had run away from home at the age of 16 because my parents wanted to force me into an arranged marriage. I haven’t spoken with them since 1998. I had my friends from work for support & who became like a family, but it wasn’t the same. I felt isolated and alone and spent three-to-four days in the hospital by myself. I had no idea what to expect during or after cancer. I found myself in this dark room in my mind. I didn't want to live. My own blood could care less about me. I was overweight & I had NO ONE THAT UNDERSTOOD WHAT I WAS GOING THROUGH IN MY HEAD. I JUST WANTED SOMEONE "WHO GETS ME".
I joined Imerman Angels 4 years after I was diagnosed in 2007. I became a VOLUNTEER & registered as a MENTOR ANGEL, an ATHLETE for Team IA, Professionals Board Member with the goal of making sure that NO ONE would have to go through cancer alone LIKE I DID. As a Mentor Angel I was first matched with a woman close to my age, faced a very similar cancer & caused by HPV. My mentee and I have become GREAT friends, and I’ve been able to support her through her recent treatments and surgeries. She has as a VERY supportive family, but having a mentor to talk to who has faced this SAME journey, has made a huge impact for her & I!!!! Catching up with her at least once a week to offer support is just as rewarding for me as it is for her!!!!! We both just "GET IT." Her journey has become a part of mine. We discuss things that we normally couldn’t discuss with our friends and family who never went through cancer. After that experience I'm now mentoring more then one person. It's one of the most REWARDING experiences in my life.
After my surgery in 2007, I wanted to get active and obtain a healthier lifestyle. The first race I ran in Chicago gave me so much confidence!!! Every race I’ve finished since, has been for Non-Profit Organizations & SPREADING AWARENESSSSS in our community. I'm so grateful to be a part of such an amazing organization. I feel that being a mentor has HUMBELED me more than anything else I have ever done in my life. I have found myself and have grown in so many ways as I’ve faced this journey. Speaking at events and eduacating people how to GET INVOLVED & BE INSPIRED has added soooo much value to my life and it INSPIRES ME to be a better person everyday!!! Through outreach and recruiting Mentor Angels, Volunteers,Team IA Athletes, has helped spread so much awareness around the GLOBE!!!!
As an athlete for Team Imerman Angels, I register for ANY RACE, ANY SPORT ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD!!!!!! The more of us that wear the Imerman Angels Jersey, the more AWARENESS WE ALL SPREAD that IMERMAN ANGELS PROVIDES FREE PERSONALIZED 1 ON 1 CANCER SUPPORT FOR CANCER FIGHTERS, SURVIVORS & CAREGIVERS ALL OVER THE WORLD!!!!!! It costs the non-profit organization around $350 for every 1 on 1 Cancer support match. Every Team Imerman Angels athlete tries to fundraise $350 (1match) FROM Jan 1st - December 31st. Team Imerman Angels helps keep the matching FREE ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS!!!!!!
In August 2012, I was diagnosed with Stage 1 Melanoma on my right leg just by going for a normal skin screening at the Dermatologist. I wouldn't have ever gone for a screening if it wasn't for Jonny spreading awareness about the importance of going to a Dermatologist once a year. I have NEVER been to one my WHOLE life. If I didn't make an appt when he told me to, I would of never have known about the Melanoma growing in my body. This time with cancer I actually had a MENTOR. It was a totally different experience compared to my first one in 2007. It wasn't as SCARY, I didn't feel as ALONE and ANXIOUS. Having a Mentor that "gets it" makes such a HUGE impact on any CANCER FIGHTER, SURVIVOR & CAREGIVERS quality of life!!!!!
Now at 32, I’m a junior at North park University finishing my BA in Non-Profit Organization Management. I completed my 43rd RACE & my 1st MARATHON here in CHICAGO on OCTOBER 13, 2013!!!!!!! Shortly after that, we lost a fellow Team IA runner, Mentor Angel & good friend Sam LiBassi after beating cancer twice. He was the first Team IA runner & cancer survivor I met when I ran my first race wearing the IA jersey. I ran Chicago Marathon 2013 in his honor and now I'm running Chicago Marathon 2014 in his memory. He was so inspired by his Mentor Angel while he was fighting that he became one too. He inspired and changed a lot of people's lives. He was the example of what a TRUE survivor is.
It has been almost 16 years since I ran away from home, I now know why I had to go through all these years of challenging experiences. I was born with a lot of energy, the gift of making people smile and the passion to live, love, and laugh to the MAXXX!!! Through this organization, I have met such amazing, inspirational & caring people. I have learned to create my own "family" and gain PEACE within myself. I hope to make a difference in the Cancer World by working with Non-Profit Organizations & always fight so NO ONE FACES CANCER ALONE LIKE I DID. Everything happens for a reason. I’m honored to have this opportunity to share my story.
