I'm not sure if it's craziness or persistence that won't let me give up on this goal, but here I go again--TAKE TWO! I am now in full training mode as I prepare to run in this year's NYC Marathon for Grassroot Soccer.
Why GRS? Well there are several reasons. First, as you may know, GRS is one of the charities we support each year with Kick for Hope. Ethan Zohn, one of its founders, has always been a great encouragement to me, especially in the early days when we were still formulating our blueprint for Kick for Hope. When so many people told me "no," Ethan took time to brainstorm with me and gave me the courage to move forward.
Secondly, last year Ethan asked me if I "knew anyone" who would want to join the GRS marathon team... Well if you know me, you know I love a challenge. I have been running half marathons for several years, but have never done a full. This will be my first one, and if my knees have anything to say about it, most likely my last. But if I am going to run one marathon in my lifetime, it may as well be the best one in the world, and I should run it for a cause I believe in! (And I soooooooo want that medal!)
Last but not least, in 2011, I spent the day with an incredible group of Grassroot Soccer Coaches in the extremely impoverished city of Alexandria, South Africa. They demonstrated the GRS curriculum as it's presented to youth. I was amazed at how the program not only teaches HIV prevention but also opens discussion about family, gender equality, leadership and more. Our K4h contriutions to GRS as well as your Marathon Fund contributions will change futures and save lives!
Extensive research has proven that GRS provides a critical step toward eliminating AIDS and the stigma attached to it, as well as promoting healthy relationships and mutual respect between genders.
When I started Kick for Hope six years ago this September, I said I would not be afraid to ask anyone for anything for the most vulnerable children in the world. (Apparently I'm not afraid to do anything for these kiddos either!) So I'm asking you to please help me raise money for Grassroot Soccer as they work to stop the spread of HIV among at-risk youth in Africa. Your contribution goes directly to GRS to help win the fight against AIDS.
Thank you so much for your support! And please remember to keep me in your prayers on November 3rd. I'll need them!
