BENEFITING: We Are Becoming Inc
We Are Becoming’s mission is to serve vulnerable young people, to give them hope and a future by providing a place to call home. Our programs are designed to nurture individual potential, self-acceptance and healthy independent living.
In the most ideal circumstances, youth will gradually transition into adulthood with support from parents, community members and network of friends. They receive not only monetary support but the guidance needed to make the right choices regarding their future goals and have a safety net to fall back on for any mistakes they may make in their journey to independence.
Many homeless youth are runaways that have left dysfunctional family environments to avoid abuse and neglect and/ or have been involved in the juvenile justice and the foster care system. Majority of homeless youth lack skills for employment and will engage in “survival sex” - trading sex for food, clothing, drugs and a safe place to sleep for a night. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports:
- over 46% of homeless youth have been physically abused
- 17% have been forced into unwanted sexual activity
- up to 50% of youth end up homeless after aging out of foster care
- 66% of youth who age out of foster care are mothers by age 24
- 25% of the at-risk youth will end up incarcerated
- many youth in the juvenile justice system will end up homeless after release
With childhood trauma, lack of support, limited services and a not yet fully developed part of the brain that is so crucial to goal attainment, our youth are left on their own without a fighting chance, on to a downward path with little hope.
In 2017, we will be launching two programs:
Our drop-in center service is built on, "How Can We Help You?" philosophy to meet each person where they are and is designed to equip young people with skills for achieving personal goals and future success. This pilot program is available to under-served young adults, ages 18- 24 in need of assistance and resources.
We Are Becoming Home
We Are Becoming’s home is an intimate, family style house, designed to be a welcoming place for every person who enters - for all to be acknowledged and respected, regardless of their past or present troubles. The home is dedicated to female young adults, ages 21-24 years old who have aged out of foster care and are homeless to create daily rhythms of shared meals, conversations, goal setting and doing life together.
Our vision is to see the compassion of Christ break the bondage of poverty and hopelessness. It is our prayer for each young person entering our home to know that they were never forgotten and that God has a good plan to give them a hope and future.
What we want to do is simple, we want to love well. It will not be easy but it will be worthwhile.
Your donations will support us as we prepare to launch our programs in 2017. Would you join us to serve the diverse needs of homeless and disconnected youth in the New York area and be a catalyst for change in the trajectory of a young life?
