BENEFITING: National Kidney Foundation, Inc.
ORGANIZER: National Kidney Foundation, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 01, 2015
My name is Ben Chan and I'm a living organ donor and a runner. I'm participating in the 2015 TCS NYC Marathon as a charity runner for Team Kidney. My goal is to raise at least $2,500 for the important work that the National Kidney Foundation does in improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by kidney disease and promoting organ donation.
In May 2012, I donated one of my kidneys to a mentor and friend who has diabetes and was experiencing early stage renal failure. Prior to the transplant, my main form on exercise was walking. Prior to the operation I vowed to live a more active and healthy life. My friends and I signed up to do our first Tough Mudder before I went under the knife. Since donating one of my kidneys, I've participated in 2 Spartan Sprints, 4 Tough Mudders, 1 24-hour Tough Mudder, 4 marathons, and several half-marathons, 10ks, and 5ks. (Lots of times wearing silly costumes.) I am grateful that I had the opportunity to donate, because as a result of giving to my friend, I discovered running.
Please consider joining the cause by donating to Team Kidney.
Also, if you have any questions regarding my experience as a living organ donor, feel free to reach out.
