BENEFITING: KIDS AGAINST HUNGER OF CENTRAL TEXAS
EVENT DATE: Mar 31, 2017
MSC FISH is raising funds for Kids Against Hunger of Central Texas with the goal of packing 25,000 meals to send to Haiti and local benefit in the Bryan/College Station area. We need YOUR help to reach this goal.
Why are we doing this? Haiti was just devastated by Hurricane Matthew. This disaster took the lives of more than 470 people and destroyed the agriculture that the country is very dependent on. With 2.5 million people living in extreme poverty, a disaster like this one has caused catastrophic damages that will be felt for years to come. Local hunger relief efforts in Haiti have called for the shipment of 35 million meals in the next six months to be able to sustain life while they try to rebuild their infrastructure and agricultural base.
That is where YOU come in. We would like to make a dent in that number. While 50,000 meals may seem very little in comparison to 35 million meals, every meal counts, especially when the Haitian people are depending on even one meal to make it through the day. Every dollar that you donate counts! Every dollar donated provides 4 meals to be packed and shipped to Haiti. All of the meals that we send to Haiti will go to their local schools. These meals allow local Haitian schools to run past lunch time, and they incentivize parents to send their children to school because they guarantee that their children will get at least one meal that day. The meals that we send go directly to help feed children and keep them in school longer in hopes of providing a better future.
In addition to the meals going to Haiti, 10% of all of the meals packed will be staying for local benefit in the Bryan/College Station area to go towards helping local hunger initiatives. We will also have several local hunger awareness organizations present on the day of our meal packing event, and are in the works to having a food drive during the day of the event as well!
Kids Against Hunger’s meals have been formulated by food scientists to provide a rich source of easily digestible protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins needed by a malnourished child’s body and mind. The food also accommodates to the broad diversity of ethnic tastes and religious differences around the world. Kids Against Hunger’s meals offer all nine of the essential amino acids required for complete nutrition – something that can’t be said about other typical food relief sources such as rice or beans alone. The beauty of the food formulation is its simplicity. It is made from four readily available, dry ingredients that are easy to package, keep for long periods, and require only boiling with water to prepare. The ingredients include high quality white, long-grain rice, vitamin-fortified, crushed soy, a dehydrated blend of six vegetables, and vitamin and mineral powder which includes 21 essential vitamins and minerals. Despite the simplicity of the food’s content, it is a nutritionally complex and well balanced meal.
Here is a little story for you: "A young man is walking along the ocean and sees a beach on which thousands and thousands of starfish have washed ashore. Further along he sees an old man, walking slowly and stooping often, picking up one starfish after another and tossing each one gently into the ocean. “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?,” he asks. “Because the sun is up and the tide is going out and if I don’t throw them further in they will die.” “But, old man, don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it! You can’t possibly save them all, you can’t even save one-tenth of them. In fact, even if you work all day, your efforts won’t make any difference at all.” The old man listened calmly and then bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it into the sea. “It made a difference to that one.”"
Every life matters. Every meal matters. Every dollar matters.
