The statistics are staggering. 46 kids will be told they have cancer EACH DAY in the United States. Thankfully, there are organizations like Kids Cancer Alliance to love and support the kids and families that are affected by this awful disease. Kids Cancer Alliance first started as a week-long camp, Indian Summer Camp, for kids with cancer, 35 years ago. Just a few years ago, because of the many programs and services that were being provided for children and their families in addition to Indian Summer Camp, the organization Kids Cancer Alliance was formed. Kids Cancer Alliance encompasses all of the programs that are offered to families affected by childhood cancer under one name. Not only is Indian Summer Camp still around to give campers and volunteers the BEST week of the entire year, there are quarterly events for kids and families, 'camp-ins' for those in the hospital, teen-weekenders, family retreats, sibling camps, scholarship programs for survivors, funeral and burial services, the list goes on and on, and in addition, a Kids Cancer Alliance family that is there every step of the way. I got involved with Kids Cancer Alliance through DanceBlue at the University of Kentucky. After spending time volunteering at the DanceBlue Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic, I couldn't get enough of the amazing people I met there; kids, parents, nurses, and doctors, alike! I started volunteering at Indian Summer Camp, as a cabin counselor in 2012 and never, ever plan on missing it. It truly is the very best week of the entire year. Being a counselor truly has changed my life. Getting to know these kids is a fascinating experience; watching them learn and grow, form friendships, share their stories of triumph, and unfortunately, sometimes loss of some of their closest friends due to cancer. Each and every child who has the desire to go to camp, to go to a quarterly event, like a Harlem Globetrotters Game, or spend the weekend with their family at the annual Family Retreat is able to do so FREE OF CHARGE because of donors like YOU. For the entire month of September, I will be raising money to support Kids Cancer Alliance in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. All donations made to this fundraising effort will go directly to Kids Cancer Alliance to provide these children with the experiences and support they may not receive elsewhere, in hopes to continue to offer them for FREE for these children and their families. THANK YOU from the very bottom of my heart for supporting this wonderful organization that is one of the most important and influential things in my life. Please know that your support is doing so much to help enhance the quality of life of children with cancer and their families. -- For the Kids
