BENEFITING: METROPOLITAN OPERA ASSOCIATION INC
It is time for our 5th Annual KAOP Ring Cycle Endurance Walk to benefit The Metropolitan Opera HD Live in Schools Program- the program that in my opinion is doing the most to bring opera to the attention of the next generation during the most formative times of their lives! There is a magic about enjoying opera at The Met Opera that takes my breath away every time I see one of their Live in HD Broadcasts or travel to NYC to see a live production at The Met. Each season the Met stages more than 200 performances in New York City. More than 800,000 people attend performances live in the opera house each the season, and millions more experience The Met through The Met: Live in HD, a series of performance transmissions shown live in high definition in movie theaters around the world. The Met Opera Live in HD Series reaches more than 2,000 venues in 70 countries across six continents.
Since its inception, the Met Opera HD Live in Schools program has enriched the lives of nearly 100,000 public school students and teachers across the United States. To date, The Met Opera HD Live in Schools program is active in 43 school districts across 33 states. It works with 680 teachers from 370 public and private schools, and over 54 productions have been screened for kids over the past 10 years. Met Opera Live in HD is not just opera- there are interviews with singers and artists, directors, conductiors, and musicians. They lift the curtain and allow you to see behind the scenes and discover how the magic actually happens. So far The KAOP RIng Cycle Endurance Walk has raised $23,000 dollars to support the HD Live in Schools Program. Your donations have sent 460 kids to Live in HD transmissions, sent a teaching artist to a NYC classroom to prepare students for an upcoming transmission 46 times and sent, and sent 11 teachers to attend a National Educator’s Conference. In addition to seeing live in HD Broadcasts. In addition, your donations have enabled some schools that are part of the Met Opera HD Live in Schools Program to have free access to the Met Opera Player, which allows teachers to stream past productions to their classrooms, allowing them to explore opera beyond the HD Transmissions. It also provides in-school workshops where singers go to schools and work with aspiring musicians, or sometimes the set or costumes designers get to talk to the kids about their work and then give them a related project, like designing their own costumes for a certain production. The Met has also begun to use Google Hangouts as part of the program to enable singers who are are unable to be physically present at the schools the opportunity to talk and interact with the kids via the computer. Students who cannot get to the opera can also participate through the computer. Last year our club raised $4,665 for the Met Opera HD Live in Schools Program, but my goal, as ever, is to raise $10,000. Thank you so much in advance for your attention, and your continued support of KAOP and The Met Opera HD Live in Schools Program. Have a great summer!!
