Kids Fit Initiative
Organized by: Rashid Jones
Childhood obesity has been on the rise (over 30% in Virginia) for quite some time more in communities that don't have access to professionals with the ability to make an impact. I am a personal trainer with over 10 years experience and have the privilege of working with the youth in the community at youngest possible age, preschool. I've had the honor of working with the Head Start program in my community.
The joy the kids had with the workouts was mind blowing and the most exciting part, they wanted to learn more and do more. One session I asked all the kids to take what they learned regarding excercise home to their family and share with me their experience, I was overwhelmed with the repsonse from several of the children as they were able to complete the workouts and their parents couldn't and questioned how were they able to do these excercises???? Several parents reached out to me with extreme gratitude which was all the more rewarding.
My goal is to expand this throughout the community, providing training and education to local daycare providers, daycare centers, as well as community agencies that may not have access to professionals that can assist in educating the youth in health and fitness.
Personal trainers seem out of reach financial to most due to economic limitations. This is my way of giving back and serving the community specifically focusing on the youth where they may not have as many opportunities. Most of the families in the community I work with are single parent families, working 2 jobs to make ends barely meet.
All funds will provide group training sessions to children from the ages 5 - 12 in small group setting with the focus on strength, flexibility, and education on health and wellness. My target is to provide sessions and education for 300 kids over the summer months my goal is to service an additional 3-5 daycare providers as well. This will provide great foundation educating our youth, with an example from professionals with the passion to see them reverse the trend of childhood obesity.
Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
