THE STORY:

What is the Angel Foundation?

In 2001, a lady named Margie from Minnesota decided she needed to do more to help those faced with cancer. With the help of her husband’s oncology practice, she pulled some funds together, and the Angel Foundation was born. The Angel Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping families and individuals who are undergoing cancer treatment. In order to qualify for assistance, a person needs to be in active treatment and reside in or be undergoing treatment in the seven-county metro area of Minnesota. In 2005, the Angel Foundation decided to help families with cancer, and they developed a program called Facing Cancer Together. This program was designed to help children and families cope with cancer through classes and events. The classes and events help parents speak to their children about cancer and what to expect, while mom or dad goes through treatment. There are also activities just for kids that bring them together with other kids whose parents also have cancer. These events let the kids share their story and release any emotions they may have. These emotions could be sadness, anger, frustration, loneliness, or contempt. Through these events, the kids are able to share their emotions with someone who can truly understand them. Kids Kamp is one of the events that help kids escape from the pressures of the life at home.

Kids Kamp is an event that is organized for kids of the ages of five to eighteen, whose parents are diagnosed with and undergoing treatment for cancer. They at times tend to feel so left alone, and all the house chores are left for them to do. Sometimes, they feel like there is no one there to help and to support them. Also, they feel shy and afraid of making new friends, as they do not know what reception they may get. They may even try to hide themselves and their parent(s), from what they think is shame or social perception. It is very important to set this kind of event to help motivate the kids and help them feel like life can still be joyful even with the cancer challenge.

Kids Kamp event is very organized. It is free for all the kids. Additionally, it is funded and steered by volunteers. Plus, there are mentors; they could be former Kids Kampers, or volunteers who would inspire the kids. Kids Kamp helps the kids to socialize, meet, and make new friends. Furthermore, they exchange their phone numbers and Facebook names. Kids also share experiences to learn and to strengthen one another. Priests and pastors are invited to strengthen kids spiritually, to help them understand that God is always by their side, and to help them stay strong in faith.

Besides that, there are also extracurricular activities and competitions that are organized such as, tug of war, dancing, bonfires, and fun events like storytelling and sharing. Kids also cook food to show their culinary talents. This in turn helps them to realize their talents and strengths and how to apply them in life. It also helps them to feel like they are not alone, and that they have people around them who care about them. Through this event, some kids get financial help. Also, they can get material assistance, such as food, clothing, and essential stuff that they need.

In conclusion, the Kids Kamp is of great importance. There have been many kids who return to Kids Kamp as adults to appreciate the event by either giving a donation or volunteering to help empower the kids. From this event, kids can socialize, make new friends, and get financial assistance. All of this is funded by volunteers and donors. These donors are ordinary people who go out of their way to make these kids feel normal in a time of uncertainty. Please consider donating to this event. It may help a child have hope in a time of despair.

Where Does My Donation Go?
