A New Challenge
<!--startfragment-->It's been just over a year now that I have been travelling in Latin America, researching music genres and learning Spanish.
I've had the privelege of meeting some of the most knowledgeable and passionate ambassadors of Latin music that one could wish for, namely: Rudy Daquín (Cuban multi-instrumentalist), Xiomara Vidal (Cuban trovadora) and Fernando Briseño (Director of the School of Mariachi in Guadalajara, Mexico).<!--endfragment-->
I've been incredibly fortunate, not only to have received high quality education in the UK, but also to have been able to travel so extensively and learn more about other cultures. Unfortunately, these kinds of opportunities are not available for many in the world.
I would now like to try to pass on some of that knowledge and inspiration to youngsters who have little or no access to music education. I will begin teaching music workshops as a volunteer for Niños de Guatemala on Thurs 22nd September 2016.<!--endfragment-->
Why Niños de Guatemala?
I have been searching for a particular kind of school in Central America. I wanted it to be a place:
- where youngsters have little or no access to music education,
- and I may have the most impact with the time that I can offer;
- which is a non-profit and has proved that it has a sustainable business model;
- which has a good profile and has the potential to attract others who could continue where I leave off.
Niños de Guatemala is a non-profit organisation which built its first school near Antigua, Guatemala in 2009. It has since built 2 more nearby, in 2012 and 2015, and provides a balanced education including personal, social and community support. It attracts a steady stream of volunteers but unfortunately very, very few have taught music.
- over 50% of the population lives in poverty
- under 40% of children continue school after primary education
- 30% of all children do not finish Grade 1 / 1st Grade (6-7yrs old)
