Organized by: Caitlin de Lisser-Ellen
I, Caitlin "I played JV Lacross once" de Lisser-Ellen, have decided to go outside my comfort zone, and hike Mount Kilimanjaro starting the 30th of August. It's been a while since my bakesale days, and so I thought it was time for another fundraiser! Since I'm challenging myself in this trek, I encourage you to challenge yourselves to engage with the world around you through donation of your time/money for a worthy cause! I made my goal for fundraising 5,895 South African Rand (which translates to roughly 555 dollars) in honor of the 5,895 meter summit I hope to reach!
While in Cape Town, I've begun volunteering for a non-profit called Young in Prison. Cape Town is wonderful but not without problems. It is estimated that approximately 1/4th of residents live in squatter homes that make up townships outside of the city. South Africa as a whole repeatedly ranks as the developing nation with the most inequality (as determined by the Gini coefficient), and this manifests itself within the prisons the most.
Young in Prison works to create preparedness for the outside world through classes that teach creative expression and real world skills in order to decrease recidivism and increase opportunity for Youths between ages 15-24 in some of Cape Town's largest prisons. Please consider donating, and if I make it up to the top, your money will go to a great cause. Anything is appreciated, whether it be 10 dollar or 100 dollars. You'll get a shout out from me from the peak! If you don't feel this is the cause for you, I urge you to donate your time/money to an organization that you're passionate about. We're inheriting a tumultuous world, and we can only hope for improvements if we improve it ourselves.
