THE STORY:

Jake O'Neil wrote -

On 24 June 2014, Tarek Muhtadi, Samer Ghalayini, Jake O'Neil and Houssein Nahle embark to climb the world’s tallest free standing mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, in order to raise money for Save the Children working with Syrian refugees in Jordan. Contributions of any sum will be highly appreciated.

Our trek will take place over a 7 day period, aiming to reach the summit on 30 June sunrise. For the past 2 months training has become largely more intense in preparation for the greatly demanding ascent. The initiative to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro occurred when our Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition did not go ahead, consequently the idea to tackle a more serious and physically demanding trek was spurred. Tarek Muhtadi is an ex resident of Tanzania and had previously climbed Mt. Meru, a mountain to which is a few hundred meters smaller than Mt. Kilimanjaro, since moving back to Bahrain from Tanzania Tarek had the urge to go back to Tanzania to conquer Africa's tallest mountain. He managed to convince fellow school peers Jake and Houssein who also became eager to try tackle Kilimanjaro. Soon Samer, Tarek's cousin also expressed interest in the challenge and was taken on board the team. It quickly occurred to the team that this could become a very charitable challenge.
A family friend, Mohab Khattab, has recently been working on the production of an eye opening documentary, Salam Neighbour, which shows the tragedy of the displaced children of Syria moving into Jordan's refugee camp Za'atari. All finance raised by the movie will go directly to three large charities working directly with the Syrian refugees. One of these being Save the Children. It immediately occurred to us that this would be a perfect charity to fundraise for.
The charity aims to provide much-needed relief and are based on the ground in camps such as Za’atari in Jordan. Any funds received will go straight to support the Save the Children response team and help refugee children have a warmer winter.
