BENEFITING: OPEN ARMS HOME FOR CHILDREN
EVENT DATE: Aug 17, 2013
On August 17, I will spend 6 days climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise funds for Open Arms Home for Children in South Africa. I have been inspired to give back to the children of whom I have learned so much from during the past year I have spent becoming a part of their family. Therefore, in order to raise funds for the 53 children at Open Arms, I will summit Mt. Kilimanjaro.
I hope to raise $1 for every vertical foot I climb: 19,341 feet = $19,341.
Open Arms exists for one reason: to provide a loving residential environment that serves the emotional, physical and developmental needs of orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged children in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
The kids at Open Arms come from nothing. There is no happy background story as to why a child is at Open Arms. Rather, it is often tragic with the loss of parental care due to illness or total abandonment. Open Arms is the first place where these children are allowed to be "kids" again; where they can play, go to school, and feel loved and safe.
Many of the school-aged children who live at Open Arms come to us with no education. They may be 9 or 10 years of age and because of circumstances beyond their control, they have never been to school. They cannot pass entrance exams to good schools so they are often doomed to substandard education in overcrowded schools wherein teachers sporadically show up. For this reason, Open Arms began a homeschooling program for ten children that started in January 2013 with the goal to bring the children up to their expected grade level and then have them re-enter the school system in better schools. It is an ambitious but necessary step to better the lives of the children
With your help, we can make a lasting difference for the children and continue to provide a loving environment in which they can grow intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually.
Open Arms is totally dependent upon donations from families, organizations and people like you as it has no governmental funding from South Africa or the United States. The children would not be in school or be in a safe, loving environment if not for you.
I feel blessed to have spent one year at Open Arms. The experience has changed my life and I hope that all of us together can continue to positively impact these 54 beautiful children's lives. All contributions to Open Arms goes directly to the children's needs, something I can personally attest to having helped run the day to day operations in South Africa.
As for those who have not contributed yet, I hope that you consider donating even a nominal amount to help support the orphans at Open Arms. Maybe consider giving up that usual morning coffee or breakfast sandwich and donate that $5 or $10 to Open Arms.
