I'm trying something new this year with my giving. My trip to Honduras this year has reminded me that there are a lot of people in my life, friends and family, whose hopes and dreams, struggles and falls, touch me and inspire me to generosity if I can simply accept that it's okay to help. I have been blessed continuously in my life, both with the raw moments of pain that connect us all to our fellow humans, and with a lot of joy and success that has provided me with energy and resources to give.
I've decided that this year instead of tithing to a church or giving to a formal charity, I'm going to try to reach (maybe exceed?) my own personal giving goal of $6,000 in 2016 (with something of a warm up in what's left of 2015), through direct support to family and friends in Honduras whose stories inspire me and whose dreams can be brought closer with a simple financial boost.
And I thought maybe some of my friends and family on the other side of the (Caribbean) pond might want to try this out too. I'm always surprised and encouraged (and sometimes saddened) when the experiences of my friends in both these worlds are so much more the same than they are different. If something in the stories of my Honduran friends and family touches you, and being able to give a few dollars and an encouraging message to one of them makes you feel more connected to the world, then taking my personal giving challenge and openly it up to you will have been worth it.
Note: all the stories and photos I share here are fully vetted with each person named, and/or their legal guardian in the case of minors. It takes a lot of courage to put your personal story out there in the world, and it is with utmost respect and deference that I do so. Except where direct quotes are noted, though, all statements and perspectives are mine.
