At this phase in my life, I do three primary things.
First, I'm the mom of wonderful twin sons Benjamin and Eric who are sophomores in two Chicago public high schools. (Yes, two different high schools -- long story!) I am the loudest cheerer at the soccer games, much to their embarassment. I share the studying, driving, cooking and so forth involved with raising sons with my dear husband of 27 years, Stephen Coats.
Second, I'm the director (and founder) of Interfaith Worker Justice. We are a national organization that mobilizes religious support for low-wage workers and rebuilds partnerships with the labor movement. The work I do, along with lots of other colleagues both on staff and on the board, is exciting and important. We are supporting an awesome set of groups around the country that are partnering with labor to ensure that workers have the right to organize and get good contracts. We are insisting that employers pay people fairly and that the Department of Labor do its work to stop and deter wage theft. We are engaging the religious community in immigration reform, wage theft, paid sick days and living wages. Check out my links to learn more about the work. My "work" is really my ministry -- one I feel called to by God -- and it is such a blessing to be able to do work that is fulfilling.
Third, I am active at Good News Community Church, a multi-cultural, multi-racial church in Rogers Park. I serve as the choir director, along with minister of music Randy Johnson. So, despite my crazy travel schedule, I do my best to be in service on Sundays and at as many rehearsals on Wednesday night as possible. I also help with the books (yuk) and support our gifted pastor, Rev. Charlene Hill.
Aside from newspapers in the morning, and reading a bit before falling asleep at night, there is not much else in my life!
