Kim Hunt Rubsam
Hi everyone! For those of you reading this who don't know me, I'm Kim, and thanks to the AMAZING Dr. Ellen Marmur, I'm a melanoma survivor...five years and counting.
Although I'm what most would consider the perfect candidate for skin cancer - fair skinned, covered with moles and freckles, a recipient of multiple sunburns during my youth (who wore sunblock back in the 70s and 80s?), and someone who took an occasional trip to the tanning bed back in my college days - I just never thought I would actually get it. In my mind, cancer was something that happened to people I knew, but not to me.
The mole with melanoma didn't look different from any other mole on my body - well, at least it didn't look different to me. I would have never looked at it and said "Wow, I better go get this checked out." If it wasn't for going to my annual skin exam (thankfully that's been a practice of mine since I was a teen), I probably wouldn't have learned about my skin cancer until it was too late.
The day Dr. Ellen gave me the news was the scariest day of my life. And the day of my melanoma removal procedure couldn't come soon enough. It was during that waiting time that I decided to start doing whatever I could to help raise awareness about skin cancer so people - especially those I know and love - wouldn't have to endure what I was going through.
To that end, in the years since my diagnosis and successful melanoma removal I've contributed to skin cancer related articles in popular health and beauty magazines and have participated in national tv news segments about skin cancer. I've also become "that person" always reminding people to wear sunscreen and visit a dermatologist at least once a year.
And now I'm supporting the doctor who saved my life and hoping that her extraordinary efforts can really propel skin cancer awareness.
Thanks for taking the time to read my story and if you chose to make a donation, thanks for that too!
