BENEFITING: KIPP LA SCHOOLS
EVENT DATE: Dec 07, 2012
Our 2nd grade students at KIPP Comienza Community Prep are ambitious artists. They receive explicit instruction in arts education four days per week and are learning how the arts and critical thinking are crucial on the path to college. We are innovators for change in a neighborhood where college is anything but the norm.
Here are all of the project details: This year, our students will engage in a three part unit of study entitled "Art for the People". They will study the Mexican Muralists Rivera, Siqueiros, and Orozco. Students will study public and street art in Los Angeles and distinguish between public art and graffiti. During their investigation, they will begin asking questions about the absence of art in our community of Huntington Park, California.
This is where the Mobile Mural Lab comes in. The MML works with schools to develop custom curriculum that promotes project based learning and mural making. Together, with the collaboration of teachers, students, and visiting artists, students will plan for and create a mural that represents the values of our school community. The final mural will be on display over the front door of our school.
The fulfillment of this fundraiser will bring the two teachers/artists from Mobile Mural Lab to our school for a four-week mural painting residency. During the residency, students will discover, explore, and understand how large format visual imagery functions and transforms space through a collaborative learning experience. Students will define ideas for a permanent visual intervention that includes the participation of the entire student body on various levels of engagement. Every student will be provided with a mural making kit that will be utilized every day during studio practice. This fundraiser will pay for the artists' time and expertise as well as the materials to create the final masterpiece.
KIPP, the Knowledge Is Power Program, is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public charter schools dedicated to preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and in life. Our vision is that all public schools will help children develop the knowledge, skills, character, and habits necessary to achieve their dreams while making the world a better place.
