BENEFITING: Kipp Ascend Charter School
EVENT DATE: Jun 23, 2012
At ages 5 and 7, M. and T. haven’t had the freedom of a childhood. Raised by their great-grandmother in Chicago’s underresourced and dangerous Garfield Park neighborhood, the boys only first had an opportunity to explore, play, and make friends when they started kindergarten at KIPP Ascend Primary.
This summer, M. and T. face seven weeks of sitting in front of the television until school begins again in August—but it doesn’t have to be this way.
We, the teachers and staff at KIPP, are raising money to send them to outdoor summer camp through the Forest Park summer recreation department. For seven weeks, they could have the chance to play, swim, run around outdoors safely, sing songs, do arts and crafts, and go on weekly field trips. What they’ll gain is cognitive stimulation, social interaction and physical fitness… but most importantly, a happy, care-free summer experience. And they’ll be ready to enter 1st and 2nd grade in a much better place.
