"Remote Area Medical (RAM) sets up emergency clinics where the needs are greatest. But these days that's not the Amazon. This charity founded to help people who can't reach medical care finds itself throwing America a lifeline". Basically, what RAM does is set up 'expeditions' ( now 60% of which are across the US and the rest are abroad) where un/under-insured people are invited to come for free medical, dental and vision attention. The Doctors are all volunteers and the care is 100% free. Many people who come to these expeditions come hours before the doors open just to be make sure they are seen, many are people who have had serious medical events in their past but have been unable to have any sort of follow-up appointments until now. Care is offered on the day and although resources are often limited, when further treatment is necessary, every effort is made to refer specific issues to low/no cost local specialists as well.
