On September 7th, I will be attempting the challenging Three Notch Century Ride, a 100-mile bicycle ride over three very tough mountain passes in the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire to raise funds for Disabled Sports USA. This event is hosted by DSUSA chapter, Northeast Passage.
I will participate alongside over 250 youth and adults with disabilities and supporters, including wounded warriors. At age 65, these long distance rides can take a bit longer, so I will be starting my ride at 3 AM!
This year’s “Three Notch Century” is special for me because I will ride in memory of Dr. Robert Harney, MD. One of the last times I cycled the Three Notch Century, “Dr. Bob” was battling the cancer that finally took his life. Despite this, he was so dedicated he still found the strength and resolve to cycle the Kancamagus Highway Pass with me (an unending 26-mile climb up 7% grades), encouraging me not to give up the tough climb.
And that was the essence of Dr. Bob. As many of you know, for over 24 years, he gave his heart and soul to the disabled sports movement. Not only did he play a vital role in guiding the success of Disabled Sports USA, but he also had a profound impact in expanding opportunities in Paralympic Sport for athletes with disabilities. More than his accomplishments, Dr. Bob was a gracious, generous man who saw the greatness in people of all abilities and encouraged everyone he met to excel in life.
In the spirit of honoring Dr. Bob, I encourage you to make a donation and support the mission Dr. Bob cared about so deeply.
Because of generous supporters like you, DSUSA, in partnership with its chapters, is able to provide programs, equipment, services and support to 60,000 youth and adults with disabilities, including over 1,200 severely wounded warriors last year, through our terrific nationwide chapter network.
Please make your tax-deductible donation of any amount here or mail to: Disabled Sports USA, 451 Hungerford Drive, Suite 100, Rockville, MD 20850. Memo: Kirk Bauer-2013 Century Ride
Thank you in advance for your generosity!
