I am walking 150 miles for my community – will you join me? Many of you know that Neighborhood Ministries is a part of a larger network of Christian organizations, churches and ministries called CCDA (Christian Community Development Association). I am a board member and a leader with this organization, we are Jesus followers. Our annual conference is nearby this year in Los Angeles. https://www.ccda.org/events/national-conferences Ten days [August 20-30] prior to our conference, a few hundred people will walk one or more days in solidarity with our immigrant communities. This walk is being called El Camino del Inmigrante (The Way of the Immigrant) https://www.ccda.org/events/el-camino ; walking the approximately 150 miles from Tijuana, Mexico to Los Angeles, California, highlighting individual stories along the way on how our current immigration system impacts specific people groups. Many of us are intimately aware of the sufferings of our immigrant neighbors and have been working devotedly while prayerfully waiting for our broken immigration system to be reformed. For their sake and for the healing of our nation we must confront the injustice of our current policy. While we as a country may shout about illegality and deportation, we also recognize our need for immigrant labor and continue to rely on this cheap, available work with little thought of its consequence. This is a grave injustice that results in families being separated, humans being trafficked & exploited and vile, anti-immigrant narratives leaving our country fractured. This walk is a walk of solidarity … we do it publicly to call out this injustice and highlight the often silenced voice of suffering of immigrants and their families. For those of us here in Phoenix and at Neighborhood Ministries, we have recognized the fierce urgency of NOW as it relates to the suffering inside our immigrant community. We have been involved on the front lines as you know since 2003, this advocacy and organizing has changed us as a ministry. The word solidarity is now an action word with lots and lots of stories connected to it. When I walk these 150 miles, I will be telling the stories of Felipa, Dora, Miguel, Lupe, Berta, Ricardo, Alfonso, Indira, Montse, Clara, Francisco and countless others. They are my family and I walk for them and with them. Will you join me? I am using this forum to let you know about the walk but also to let you know that I am raising some funds for it. 1.) I will need a little money myself for housing. I am trying to get free lodging each night of the walk, but a few nights I will need to stay in a hotel. $400 2.) Nine of NM young latino leaders are going to the CCDA conference. These young leaders are our future. We take their training seriously. The cost of this conference for them is $1600. 3.) In support of CCDA, I am committed to seeing this organization flourish. I hope to raise $1000. Altogether, my prayer is that this site raise $3000 as I/we stand in solidarity with our immigrant brothers and sisters. I walk for them, and I walk for you. I am reminded of Abraham Heschel who when marching with MLK from Selma to Montgomery said, “I am praying with my feet”. This is a very exciting time to be alive to pray with my feet, thank you for joining me as you have joined me so often in the past. Please stay tuned for more information. I will be tweeting and emailing from the walk all 10 days. Be loved today. I love you, kit
