BENEFITING: KITTREDGE SCHOOL PTO
Kittredge Elementary School is the oldest in the North Andover school district and a source of pride for our students, parents and community. Considering our age, we are appointed with the original building and are the only school in the district without a gymnasium. Everyday our 300 students eat, play, gather, and rehearse in our now famous “cafegymatorium.” We are often challenged by the overwhelming need of this community space, resorting to PE in the classroom, outdoor classes, reduced lunch time, we are literally busting at the seams. Committed to the health and wellness of our students our faculty has faced the challenge and look forward to the future of Kittredge.
Through the tremendous support of our Kittredge families and the entire North Andover community we received approval and necessary funding at Town Meeting to move forward with the development of this vital project. Unfortunately, due to an increase in the cost of building supplies from the time the project was spearheaded to present, we are at a deficit to support a fully appointed gymnasium for our students. Although the generous backing from North Andover will cover the building itself, it does not allow for a few major interior items, specifically hardwood flooring, basketball hoops, and wall padding.
The vision for the gymnasium was to create a space not only for Kittredge students, but to support the collective need of our community. Hardwood flooring as opposed to the currently proposed concrete floor, would provide for versatility and safety for use by the students, Community Programs, and seniors. Appropriate wall padding would protect against collision and provide for maximum sound absorption supporting safety and extend usage for music, theater, and assembly. Basketball hoops and the padding would also encourage use by the North Andover Booster club and support compliance for higher levels of competition. The bottom line is the need to build a safe and multipurpose gymnasium for the whole community.
