BENEFITING: KGWALE LE MOLLO US
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2011
HOURS PLEDGED: 1,000
I am proud and excited to run the New York City Marathon for the Kgwale le Mollo Foundation (klm-foundation.org) and its young South African Scholars. I would love for YOU to help me, in the next 133 days, to fundraise as I rack up 758 miles before race day on November 6, 2011. Here's why:
In 2005, my two-year Peace Corps service in South Africa was coming to a sudden and fast close. During that time, I had the privileged opportunity to both find a small corner of South Africa to call home and make lifelong friends with my fellow volunteers.
Several volunteers and I wanted to stay meaningfully connected to each other and with the country that had offered us so much during our two year stay. As a result, the Kgwale Le Mollo Foundation was founded and continues its work six years later.
The Kgwale le Mollo Foundation's mission is to effect change in underserved, rural communities by helping to improve access to higher education and social opportunities for talented young people from marginalized communities in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. Since 2005, we have selected 9 exceptional South African youth to attend Uplands College, one of the country's premier college preparatory institutions. The students undergo a rigorous and highly competitive selection process after which KLM provides them with the tools to succeed at Uplands -- both socially and academically.
