Knight Family Adoption Fund
Organized by: Katie McHugh
My sister's family is adopting a teenage girl from an orphanage in Eastern Europe. Every year I run a marathon in the name of a charity. This year, the chairty is close to home, I will run the marathon in the name of my new niece, as I look to my loved ones to donate a dollar (or more) per mile of the 26.2 race.
A few of her young family members have already made it to families in the U.S. and my family is working on reuniting her with her loved ones and bringing her into our family. They have already raised one-fourth of what they will need to bring her home, I am working on raising the next fourth.
Statistics about orphans in this Eastern European country:
-Orphans are turned out of the orphanage at age 16
-Within the first five years after this “graduation” almost 90% of these children end up in crime, prostitution, drug and alcohol addiction, or commit suicide
-In this particular country 10%-15% of children who age out of an orphanage commit suicide before age 18
-60% of the girls are lured into prostitution
-70% of the boys become hardened criminals
