Yes, it's just me again...

I promise this is the last email...but I really thought you should know. Due to your support and donations via Crowdrise (fundraising website) - we earned over 350,000 "Impact Points." I just redeemed them to adopt an acre of African Savannah, feed 300 families in NYC, sponsor kid's soccer camp/HIV education & send malaria nets to Africa! How AWESOME is that!? We earned over 350,000 points to make this all possible! Imagine the hundreds of lives we just touched, not to mention the ones we may have saved! THANK YOU so much again! I though this might make your heart sing, as it does mine.

Wishing you the most magical holiday season. May 2014 bring you all things inspiring! xo

Your truly,

Last continuation...

I couldn’t possibly thank you enough for this gift you have given me. Your friendship, your positive energy, your unconditional support, and most all, your ability to heal a broken heart. I don’t think I realized how much healing was happening until the day after the race. Teammates/friends together, we honored Mari with leis and love at the beach. My heart felt lighter. I felt at sense of peace… and that constant hollow pain I had become so accustomed to….had subsided. The only thing that meant more to me than that, was when I learned some of you shared the same feeling. I truly believe that Mari knew what this was all about the whole time. She allowed us to think it was all about her and honoring her…however, I think she was being the selfless friend that she always was, by giving us this time to heal. Together. I realize, for some of you, it may not have been Mari’s loss that you needed healing from, however I can only imagine how happy Mari is to know she helped your healing process too. Thank you for sharing your stories with me. Thank you for sharing your inspiration with me. Thank you for this journey of a lifetime. I cannot think of a bigger honor than to have had this chance to be teammates with you. TEAM MARI is something else, and I can only hope that Mari and her closest loved ones all feel this unspeakable love we share in Mari’s memory.

1 World Championship Ironman completed. $31,000 raised for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Infinite positive energy inspired proving “Anything is Possible!” All in the name of TEAM MARI. All inspired by you. THANK YOU so much! I wish you the most wonderful holiday season...to remember, to be thankful and to live life to the fullest as we look forward to a new year. With all my heart and soul…Mahalo TEAM MARI!

Sincerely,
“Kona” Kelly

P.S. I have a lil' video compilation in the works. It has taken much longer than planned (as I learn to use my Mac), but I will continue to work on it in the new year and promise to share it when it's all done! ;)

Some of you know may know, that despite my smile and carefree exterior attitude, deep down, I was afraid. That same fear is what motivated me…it’s what inspired me too because not only did I want to keep a promise to Mari and honor her memory, I wanted to represent Team Mari in the best way I knew how. I didn’t want to disappoint you, and I certainly didn’t want to do you any less proud than you deserved.

So, I pushed hard every day. No short cuts. All heart. Every long weekend may have sounded insane to many, but honestly, I never once thought of it like that. I actually looked forward to it. Why? It wasn’t the miles that made me excited (trust me)…it was taking on this challenge with you! I was so genuinely excited to see you. I couldn’t wait to “hang out” and be around the people who inspire me. Regardless of the before dawn mornings, or the crazy hours out there training….I didn’t think about that. I would just look forward to who was joining me that day, and where we might go eat afterwards. :) I was also powered by the stories you shared with me and your inspired words from afar.

Just as this journey began, it was about Mari, my teammate, my friend. The journey continued to be nothing less than that…however, today, I realize that it was just as much about you, Team Mari, as it was about Mari herself. Let’s be honest, I wouldn’t be a triathlete if it weren’t for the TEAM. I never really thought I’d be a triathlete at all…and I certainly never dreamed of being an IRONMAN. It is only because I was having so much fun with a bunch of awesome people while sharing goals toward an amazing cause, that I am. It is only because of Mari and because of you that I was inspired to jump back in after claiming to be “one & done” after Ironman Canada. As you know, this time it wasn't about the swim, bike, run at all...it was about TEAM MARI. for me, from day one, it has been all about the people. How could it not be?

As you may know, I was 35,000 feet in the air flying home from Pennsylvania when my Producer woke me up to show me the winner announcement on the Kona Inspired website. I can honestly say that I was in a state of shock. I didn’t know what to do, or how to be. I hadn’t really considered what it would be like if we actually won because I was still so taken by the togetherness and inspiration of Team Mari during the entry and voting process. It took a long time for it to sink in. Actually, I don’t think it did until long after I crossed that finish line in Kona.

I began training in April before we knew if Kona would become a reality. Obviously, I had to, just in case. Then suddenly, that day we won, it was happening. It was really happening. From that day forward, I didn’t do a single training session alone. Even while traveling on the road, I knew you were with me as I shared photos and updates from my training each day and you sent me your words of encouragement! Every weekend for the looong sessions, I’d have a group of you amazing folks join me, no matter how long nor how hot the day was going to be. I had you there for SAG support with cold water, ice, pretzals and hugs along the way. I had bike buddies to push me through even the strongest headwinds along the Malibu coast, and most of all, I had the support that kept me feeling confident and safe…even on the very stretch of highway where we lost our friend. If you didn’t bike with me, then you ran with me or you swam with me. You’d meet me at the oddest hours, drive miles away just to help keep me going through my long brick days or multiple hour aqua jog sessions at the pool. Some days I had over 100 miles on my schedule, yet you would be there. You did whatever you could in terms of time or mileage, no matter if that meant 10 or 50 miles….sometimes you stuck with me for 80, hills and all! You woke up before the crack-o-dawn for sunrise morning ocean swims and rallied to finish your days with sunset runs. How can I ever express how much it meant to me to have you there with me? I’m not sure I’ll do it right, but here’s me trying.

Dear TEAM MARI,
Please forgive the delay in me getting this to you. I wasn't sure how to put all my emotions into words, so I hope you can follow the free flow of my emotions here. It seemed the best way I knew how to speak to you from my heart. There is a limit to the amount of characters I can send you, so please also forgive the multiple emails. I couldn’t cut it shorter…I needed to gush a bit. ;)

You have made me a better person. Thank you, as you have changed my life forever for the better. You are absolute proof that anything is possible!

The past year or so, I have had moments of overwhelming sadness only to be matched by the unbelievable inspiration and strength that love and friendship can create. When I first reached out to a few teammates about possibly entering the Kona Inspired Contest, I received nothing but incredible support, encouragement and willingness to help. I was blown away. A few weeks later, when my entry was officially submitted, within minutes, the social media sharing frenzy literally took my breath away. I had arrived early to a voice-over session for work that morning and happened to glance at my phone. I had to step into the bathroom, as my heart jumped and tears were streaming down my face. I was in absolute awe of you. Little did I know… that was just the beginning.

For weeks, the unwavering support only grew stronger and spread wider as friends from my childhood, TNT athletes, triathletes, friend’s families, family friends, friends of friends, co-workers, and complete strangers joined TEAM Mari. Wow! Mari touched countless lives while with us, and she continued to touch hearts around the globe even from heaven. In the final days of voting, I was on a business trip for work. I would receive text updates with vote counts and words of encouragement from you. When I finally sat in front of my computer that evening, I witnessed the most astounding display of teamwork I’ve ever experienced. The count was rapidly increasing before my very eyes! I could feel your love and determination. Meanwhile, I could do nothing more than sit and sob as I stared at my computer screen. I didn’t realize at the time, but there was so much hurt being healed with every moment. I have you to thank for all of that.

Stuff About Me:

Throughout my life, I've learned through both miraculous triumphs and devastating tragedy that the IRONMAN Mantra is true - anything is possible

Over the past 3 years, I’ve been inspired to tri for a cause.  I have raised over $30,000 for The Leukemia Lymphoma Society with Team in Training, and have grown to love IRONMAN events through race experiences at Vineman 70.3, Hawaii 70.3 and IRONMAN Canada.  Recently my Dr. told me no more running, not if I want to walk normally at 40.  However, he gave me one last go when I explained why trying to earn a slot to Kona was important. This time, things are different and my inspiration comes not from a personal goal, but from one person.  Marisela Echeverria. My friend. My teammate.

Through the Kona Inspired Contest, I‘ve been honored to share Mari’s story of both inspiration and heartbreak, while touching so many hearts worldwide. Best of all, winning a coveted slot to Kona will help me fulfill Mari’s so deserved IRONMAN dream and honor her memory.

We lost dear Mari in a cycling accident on the afternoon of October 13, 2012, the same day as the Kona World Championship 2012.  She was training for her first Ironman (IMAZ), and her second attempt to race, after losing her father the night before our originally planned big day at Ironman Canada the August prior.  Sadly, these were tragic reminders that anything is possible.

After completing Vineman 70.3 together in 2011, Mari played an integral part in convincing me to register for IRONMAN Canada.  In the first months of our new season, I had arranged a viewing party for our team to watch the World Championship broadcast together.  Completely oblivious to it at the time, it was there that Kona seed was planted. My Coach teased, “Kelly, you could probably get into Kona through a media slot.  I mean, you are on one of the most well-known, longest running T.V. shows in American history!”  I had no idea what he was talking about at first. I laughed it off because my team loves to tease me about my job on the Jeopardy! Clue Crew.  However, dear Marisela would not let it go!  She kept saying, “Kelly, you have to try!  I mean, if someone has a chance to do Kona, you HAVE TO, right? I would give anything to do it!”  At this point, IM Canada was a distant dream to me.  I was still getting used to the idea that I had committed to train for a full IRONMAN at all. I was definitely not thinking about the World Championship ever being a reality!   I joked with Mari, “Yeah, ok…then I’ll do it, if you do it. Deal?” She undoubtedly promised, if she could get in, she would. Regardless, she promised to be there to cheer for me if I ever got in. I laughed, and we made a deal.

I plan to make good on that deal in October. Despite my apprehensions, Mari lived by the saying, “If you aren’t scaring yourself, you’re doing it wrong.”  So, I must be doing something right.  Not only do I want to keep my promise to Marisela, and do this for her, I know she will also keep her end of the deal, and be there to cheer me on. This is one of the biggest honors of my life; my final IRONMAN amidst the world’s best triathletes to keep a promise and celebrate the memory of my dear friend.  I can’t imagine a better way to honor Mari for the 1 year anniversary of her passing.

Through this journey to Kona, I will fundraise for the charity that brought my life & Mari’s together; The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. TEAM in Training has changed my life for the better, and I will be forever grateful. GO TEAM!

Thank you for your your support! xo
