Thank you for taking a moment to read about this important cause.
By a last minute turn of events in September, I jumped into training for the NYC marathon 7 weeks from the day of the race. This is my first marathon, and I'm excited to turn my baseline running schedule into a means of helping the emerging healthcare system in Kono, Sierra Leone.
Shine on Sierra Leone, Wellbody's partner in addressing maternal and child health, has shared this spot in the marathon, and we are grateful for the opportunity.
Wellbodi means “health” in Sierra Leone’s national Krio language, and Wellbody Alliance seeks to ensure long-lasting health Kono District, the country’s prime diamond-mining region only slowly recovering from the end of the war a decade ago. Last summer, I worked with Wellbody Alliance in Kono for two months and have continued to volunteer since. Over the past year, I have seen that Wellbody is renowned throughout the country for its reliability, hospitality, and free care for pregnant women and children under five.
Everyone I spoke with during fieldwork knew they could look to Wellbody for a standard of care and followthrough uncommon throughout the region. The clinic is a ten-hour drive inland from the capital on the coast, yet I interviewed several patients in the ward who had made the trip because they trusted Wellbody’s staff and services above all others. Wellbody is helping thousands a year focus on their families and work by ensuring their healthcare will not be a source of worry.
