KP Dragons Team Boat Maintenance Fund
Organized by: Darlene Kong
EVENT DATE Nov 01, 2016
We are an self-supported team and our goal is to keep our boats in good working condition. Why is this important?
In order for us to continue each year, we must maintain our boats. All materials that come in contact with sunlight and salt water disintegrate over time. We spend money and time doing everything we can keep our boats clean and maintained, but even with elbow grease, we need to pay for bigger maintenance projects and these costs add up. Please help us continue this program.
Our team is part of the Oakland community. Dragonboating is more than just racing boats that are shaped like dragons. We function as an afterschool program and surrogate families. We coach youth and adult paddling in Oakland and surrounding areas. Similar to rowing, each paddler must be in time with all members of the team. We work to spread a culture of good sportsmanship and teamwork.
Historically we were comprised of employees of Kaiser Permanente, the largest managed care and non-profit health plan in the U.S. employees and community members. Now, our team represents the diverse community in which we work, serve and live who proudly embrace the role as ambassadors for health and fitness. We are also growing new ambassadors for the future with our youth team “ eLEMONators”, comprised of youths from Oakland public schools and its neighboring communities. However, we are not only about fruits and vegetables or about Band-Aids and blood pressures, we are about lasting friendships, food, fun, and meeting new challenges.
Help us continue to foster camaraderie and companionship, and build self-esteem and a sense of community through the sport of dragon boating. Together we build strength, TRUST & RESPECT, achieve competitive goals, and experience the shear joy of accomplishment.
