On June 14th, I'll be heading to Africa for three weeks with fourteen high school students from Marin Academy. We'll be visiting an all-girls boarding school in Kenya called Daraja Academy. Daraja was started three years ago by two young and inspiring educators from the Bay Area. With three grade levels (soon to be four) and 77 current students, Daraja provides four-year scholarships to bright but impoverished Kenyan girls who would have no other way to access a secondary education. While there, I'll be working with both MA and Daraja students on projects centered around education, technology, campus improvement, and cultural exchange.
In an effort to both help the MA students fund the trip AND raise funds for the school, I am running the San Francisco Bay to Breakers 12K Race on Sunday, May 15th. At the same time, the girls from Daraja will also be running their own Bay to Breakers ten thousand miles away on the Daraja campus in Kenya. I am teamed up with a 10th grader named Fatuma who lost her father when she was just four years old. With his loss, the financial support of the family dissipated, and her mom was forced to sell bread and tea in the evenings, leaving Fatuma and her younger brother alone to fend for themselves. Despite this, I am told has a great sense of humor and exudes confidence and determination. She has a strong desire to better her situation and is working hard at Daraja in order to accomplish this goal.
If you are interested and able, both Fatuma and I would greatly appreciate your sponsorship as we run for Daraja on May 15th. Your donations can either be used to help fund the trip for an MA student or be applied directly to the needs of Daraja Academy. Please indicate what you prefer. Both types of gifts are tax deductible.
Thank you so much for your support! I am extremely grateful!
