Daraja Academy is a boarding secondary school for Kenyan girls with top academic scores and exceptional leadership skills but no means to continue their education. The academy provides shelter, food, healthcare and counseling services which allows students to focus on their academic and personal potential, without being hindered by the everyday barriers of poverty.
Claris is one of 13 children whose father had two wives. When Claris was young, her father’s second wife passed away leaving all the children under the care of Claris’ mother. There were several small children at the same age and all the siblings pitched in to help. Because of the poverty level of the family, none of the children were able to proceed to secondary school, until last year due to two scholarships made available to the family. One of those being a Daraja scholarship for Claris.
During Claris’ primary school, her father and two brothers became very sick and needed lots of care and medical treatment. She often stayed home from school to assist. Claris is very bright and was determined to finish her education. She finished her 8th grade year, but there was no money to continue forward. Without telling her family, she decided to repeat 7th and 8th grade in the hopes that within those two years, the family might be able to come up with fees for secondary school.
I am asking my friends and family to be a part of this historic occasion by becoming a sponsor for Claris as she runs her laps. You decide how much you want to give, per lap, for each girl that runs, per lap per each girl that runs or just a one time donation. It is up to you! I'm looking for at least 10 sponors for Claris. Each girl on campus has a sponsor raising money either as a racer or as a cheerleader.
