As many of you are aware, last year was my first attempt at running the Boston Marathon. I was unable to complete the marathon due to the tragic bombings that occurred in our city on that date. That will be a day forever etched in my memory. Our city experienced such tragedy on that day and on some many different levels. It will never be forgotten. Boston may never be the same but the bonds that have brought us all together since have made Boston a stronger city overall.
When I think back on that day which I have on many occasions, I don't think about the months of training and effort that were taken from me as that does not compare in any way to what others experienced on that day. Instead, I am grateful that those family and friends who were there to support me were not harmed in any physical way. That day was unlike any other for me as I was only a short 3 miles from the end of the race when I was stopped in my tracks and told the marathon was over due to a bombing at the finish line. My parents, sister and nephew all had finish line passes and were there to support me on that date. My phone had died and I had no idea if my family or friends were harmed. I was lucky enough then to meet up with a friend who had a working phone and found out my family and friends were okay. The friend whose phone I used was made aware of an injury in her own family but not really aware of what that injury was. Luckily that injury was not life threatening. As we continued to walk around the outskirts of the city, I saw many kind people offering up sweatshirts and clothing to cold runners. I also witnessed unkind acts such cabs not willing to take runners because they most likely had no money. Its a day I won't forget.
As a result of this, I am looking forward to the opportunity to run the Boston Marathon again. I have been training since October and while I have hit some bumps in the training, I plan to be at my best on April 21, 2014.
