#TBT Chicago Marathon….Here I go again! In 2006, I ran my first marathon in Chicago. Nolan was an infant and the training served as a great focus away from the busyness of a baby and two toddlers. I trained on my own and did a lot of the running on a treadmill during nap times. My best friend, Kaye Anne was meeting me in Chicago, so she served as my “virtual” training partner. Chicago was the perfect place to run my first marathon. What an awesome city and the course is flat as a pancake! We loved it so much, we went back in 2007 for what we still refer to as Hot Chicago. It was almost 90 degrees at the start…how is that possible in October in Chicago? We were lucky to finish and I can remember that day like it was yesterday. It continues to serve as a motivation for me to accept things when they don’t go as planned. All I need to say to my kids is “Hot Chicago” and they know that means don’t quit, things are not always how you plan, and then they usually tune me out, but I deep down believe the message sticks! Needless to say, Chicago (and Boston J) top my list of favorite places to run 26.2. Fast forward, Nolan is about to turn 10 next week and I no longer need to train on a treadmill, thank goodness! I have two awesome and amazing training partners, Beth and Jody who are joining me in the journey this time! Kaye Anne….I’m still counting on you “virtually” and for some warm up miles!
Beth and Jody are motivating me during HOT training runs, but so is the fact that I’ve chosen to support Girls on The Run Chicago. I want this trip to Chicago on October 11th to be different. I want to give back to an organization that I have personally been involved with. I had the opportunity with Emma-Kate to coach 3 seasons of Girls on the Run (GOTR) and it is a program I wish all 3rd through 5th grade girls could experience. GOTR instills self-confidence, positivity, and healthy habits for girls to carry into their future. I chose to run for this organization because I firmly believe it is so important to instill these values in girls at an early age. I’ve included some photos above of my coaching days and the amazing girls!
I strongly believe that every girl should have the opportunity to grow up strong, healthy and confident, which is why it is a GOTR promise to never turn away a girl from their program because of her inability to pay the program fee.

Girls on the Run, it is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) life-changing, after-school program for girls in 3rd-8th grade. Simply put, Girls on the Run transforms the way girls see themselves and their opportunities. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment, while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. The mission is achieved by volunteer coaches who meet with the girls as a team twice per week for 12 weeks as they complete the curriculum which creatively integrates running, goal-setting and training for a non-competitive 5k running event with interactive lessons that encourage positive social-emotional and physical development among participants.
Every donation has a huge impact!
$10 will cover the cost of one girl's healthy snacks for a season
$25 will cover the cost of 150 bananas for the 5k finish line
$44 will cover the cost of 50 tiaras for the girls to decorate at the activities tent at the 5k
$152 will cover the cost of one girl to participate in the program for one season
$260 will cover the cost of water bottles for 400 girls
$335 will cover the cost of program t-shirts for 85 girls
$525 will cover the cost of all curriculum materials and supplies for 6 teams
$796 will cover the cost of training 20 new coaches
$988 will cover the cost of finisher medals for 650 girls
$1,500 will cover the cost of healthy snacks for 15 teams of 15 girls
$2,283 will cover the cost to implement the program at one new low-income site
