Founded in 1988 at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum (BCM) by Founder & Executive Director Kashani Stokley and his youth counselor Stan Morse, our mission is to provide youth and young adults from economically disadvantaged backgrounds with a means of self-expression and self-development through exceptional dance, choreography and costuming.
K.S. J.A.M.M. conducts a 10-Month September through June Instructional Cycle. Dance classes are offered in Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, African and Hip Hop dance for students 3 years old through young adult. The 6 levels offered to students are the Angel Tots, Beginners I, Beginners II, Intermediate, Advanced and Adult Groups. In addition to the levels that are offered, students have the opportunity to audition to become a member of the school’s touring performance group The Repertoire Company. The Repertoire Company performs for non-profits, community based organizations and events to educate and enrich a diverse general public on the positive impact of dance in communities.
The culmination of the year’s work is presented in an annual 2-hour recital attended by an average audience of 600 family members, friends, guests and members of the local community.
Now entering our third decade, K.S. J.A.M.M. leased a commercial space for our new dance studio in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn in August 2014. Our new space has 3-dance studios that offer dance classes for students 3 years old to adult. The studio also allows us to expand class offerings that provide the same level of high-quality and low-cost instruction, as well as low-cost studio rental to the community.
