BENEFITING: BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF NYC
EVENT DATE: May 21, 2016
As a seven-year-old arriving at JFK International Airport freshly from China in the summer of 2007, I was bubbling with excitement. I was going to a new country to have many adventures, seeing my mother (who was studying at Columbia University) for the first time in almost a year. At that time, I was unaware of the challenges that I faced. I could speak little English besides greetings, had no friends in this new world, and would have to adjust to life in a new nation amongst people with different upbringing and customs. In fact, when I began second grade in 2008, I had to learn how to speak, understand, read, and write English; all without any friends besides my mother. At this point, it was the Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City that played the most prominent role after my mother in helping me find my place. Their mission: “to give all children in New York City who face adversity an opportunity to experience a strong, enduring professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationship with adults that will help change their lives for the better” helped me overcome all challenges and rise higher than I ever expected. My mother signed me up, and soon I was paired with a brilliant young man named Patrick. With Patrick I found a mentor and friend who I could look up to, play with, and would help me through all of life’s difficulties. Patrick introduced me to baseball— a sport I have continued to love, nurtured my drawing ability, and encouraged me to follow my dreams. Patrick enforced the message for me that I should never give up or back down to a challenge, that I could adjust to life here and have fun while doing it. With Patrick I found a friend at a time in which I had none, and a role model at a time when I needed it the most. Now, as an incredibly happy ninth grader attending the High School of American Studies at Lehman College, I hope to give back to Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City while doing something I love. Thank you for visiting this site! Please donate and help me meet my goal of raising $2000 dollars, enough to fund a par of bigs and littles like Patrick and me for another year.
