Over the next 8 weeks, I will begin my training and run the 2016 Boston Marathon for KultureCity, specifically for the lifeBOKS program.
Let me begin by telling you about the day that I almost lost our son. He was 5 years old, non-verbal but highly inquisitive and easily drawn away by the sound of water, or any sight that might have caught his eye for the moment. It was a split second distraction with his baby brother, and in less than a minute he was gone. We later found him by the side of the main road a distance away, playing with a stick that had caught his attention. If not because of this momentary fascination with said stick, he would have wandered to the highway a few feet away.
This is a common story among families with special needs children, many who are prone to wandering. Parents say that this is one of the most stressful behaviors they have to contend with, so much so that it prevents families from engaging in activities outside the home. A child can wander away from any location. They wander away because they don’t see the world the same way we do and are more likely to act on their impulses. They also wander so they can go to a favorite place, experience the joy of running or exploring or even escaping an anxious situation. They wander even with great parent supervision. All it takes is a moment’s glance away.
KultureCity's lifeBOKS initiative is designed to help prevent wandering and wandering related accidents/deaths in children with autism. LifeBOKS is a free kit that contains a bluetooth tracking bracelet, wireless door alarms, a QR code ID shoe tag, safety temporary tattoos and wandering prevention information. To date, 498 lifeBOKS has been sent to families at no cost, and more than 28 near drowning have been prevented. Please visit KultureCity's website (www.kulturecity.org) and facebook page for stories from families who have received lifeBOKS. Your heart will be touched by their stories- I know mine was, and I am eternally grateful that our son was unharmed that day.
Donate because you know that every dollar goes towards saving a child's life. Give because every dollar will help prevent a child from drowning, wandering and wandering related tragedies. No amount is too small.
As I train and complete this marathon, I will be encouraged and sustained by the fact that together as a community, we can make a difference for these children and their families.
Thank you for supporting KultureCity's lifeBOKS program, and please share this fundraiser through your own network to help spread the message to others who might also want to support and donate to this amazing cause!
