BENEFITING: NGOGO CHIMPANZEE PROJECT INC
PLEASE NOTE: You can donate directly to Kyakagunga via the Ngogo Chimpanzee Project website (ngogochimpanzeeproject.org). Just leave us a note specifying you would like your donation to go to Kyakagunga!
Kyakagunga Primary School sits on the edge of Kibale National Park in a particularly rural part of western Uganda. Since 2008, researchers with the Ngogo Chimpanzee Project have been fundraising to build, expand, and maintain Kyakagunga. Thanks to the generosity of numerous donors, construction was completed last year on a 5th and 6th classroom, as well as an office and girls’ bathroom. Now the school can accommodate more students who would otherwise have to walk long distances for an education. In addition, Kyakagunga can now qualify for government-funding, which will make the school self-sufficient.
Why are we fundraising?
Until the school receives government support, Kyakagunga needs funding to retain high quality, trained teachers. Most of the parents at Kyakagunga are subsistence farmers, so they cannot afford the school fees required to pay teachers. Consequently, the Ngogo Chimpanzee Project supports a trained head teacher, a deputy head teacher, and two additional trained teachers. The purpose of this fundraiser is to provide salaries for these trained teachers for one year while the school continues to apply for government certification. The teachers get paid between $90 and $140 per month; thus, we need $5,000 to pay for four teachers for one year. Retaining these four teachers is required to achieve government funding and will also ensure a high quality education for students.
Why should you donate?
Your donation will support education in a rural Ugandan community bordering Kibale National Park, which will help … 1) provide members of this community with opportunities for better employment, and 2) protect endangered wildlife by imparting the importance of ecological diversity and discouraging environmentally harmful activities such as poaching. So education provides better employment opportunities and protects wildlife—everyone wins!
Perks for donors:
If you donate to Kyakagunga Primary School, we will: 1) Send you audio clips from the forest! Enjoy the sounds of Kibale National Park, including chimpanzee vocalizations. 2) Place a pin on the map of the world at Kyakagunga marking your place of residence.
