BENEFITING: Global Health Innovations
EVENT DATE: Apr 14, 2013
I am going to run the Big D Texas Marathon in Dallas on April 14.
That’s 26.2 miles of sweat, challenge, endurance, and pain… and sometimes getting yourself to train daily for the actual race is the hardest part. So as I train, I want to think about something bigger than myself. God placed this desire on my heart a few weeks ago during one of my long runs.
So, how am I going to do this?
HIV/AIDS is still a huge problem killing over 6,000 African people each day. It’s both preventable and treatable. It is estimated that more than 16 million children under 18 have been orphaned by AIDS with 14.8 million of these children living in sub-Saharan Africa. Over 700,000 newly born infants become HIV positive each year with little access to HIV care. Without intervention, 15%-45% of these infants born to HIV-infected mothers get the virus. In the absence of antiretroviral therapy, more than 50% of children will die before their second birthday and 75-90% will die by age five.
Sometimes statistics can make us numb. But we have to remember that each one of those children has a name and a family.. Each statistic is a LIFE.
Global Health Innovations (GHI) is a non-profit organization that exists to design, implement and manage medical programs focused on providing solutions to save lives…one village at a time. GHI has come up with the HITSystem, which stands for HIV Infant Tracking System. The HITSystem provides life-saving interventions to those affected most by HIV/AIDS in Kenya and Malawi. (for more details on the HITSystem, visit www.globalhealthinnovations.org, or the GHI crowdrise page)
My goal: I want to raise at least $3,600 to help support a hospital in Kenya to fund a life-saving maternal and pediatric HIV/AIDS program for six months. ($7,200 would fund a hospital for an entire year!)
What can you do?: Support me by giving one-time donations, pledging an amount per mile, or spreading the word to your friends. 100% of your donations will go toward hospitals in Kenya to help save lives.
Mother Teresa said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”
I can’t do great things, but I can run with great love. Will you join me?
