WAVES for Development- Lobitos, PERU
Organized by: Benjamin Clarke
In mid August, I will spend 3 weeks in Peru working for a charity called WAVES for Development. Through the support of donations and international volunteers, WAVES provides community outreach, environmental health and entrepreneurial empowerment programs in the surfing and fishing village of Lobitos, Peru. I will be joining longtime friend MikeyThompson with the intention of starting a partnership with Waves for Development and another non profit, Lacrosse the Nations (LtN). Mikey has been a valuable member of LtN an “international non- profit organization that unifies the lacrosse community to sustainably improve education and health while creating hope and opportunity for children in need.”
While I have never been a part of LtN I have always been a supporter and advocate of what they do. Ellen Cohn executive director of LtN says, “"It is a gift to Lacrosse the Nations to have Ben give of his time--to travel to Peru, meet with a potential LtN partner -WAVES -and ultimately 'give the game' to children in need. He and Mikey Thompson are traveling thousands of miles all in the spirit of Lacrosse the Nations. I know that both will have many insights and ideas to share when they return in September!"
Our typical day in Lobitos will consist of teaching english to Peruvian youths, sports activities (lacrosse!!), and research in developing social entrepenurial strategies to bring a sustainable community to Lobitos. However, from the start, we as volunteers for WAVES are asked to give a minimum contribution of $595, additionally; we have a weekly cost of $395, all of our work is voluntary so any contribution helps.
My goal of $2,500 would greatly affect the success of a potential partnership between these two non- profits. I am very excited about this experience and greatly appreciate any and all of your help in this worthwhile endeavor. All the money I raise with your help goes directly to expenses related to the WAVES program and the possibility of a Lacrosse the Nations program in Peru! THANK YOU.
