BENEFITING: FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH
In February, 11 young adults will be traveling from the United States to the remote, rural village of La Danta, Nicaragua, to take part in the following community-initiated projects: - supervision and repair of water filters we installed last March, in the homes of extremely impoverished families who do not currently have safe drinking water - construction of a porch for the health clinic, which will allow patients being seen by the health promoter more privacy while others wait to be seen - a Communications Clinic for couples We are traveling at the invitation of the community, which has identified clean water as a top community priority. The cost of these projects totals $4500. We have already raised a little less than half of what we need. As in many other rural communities, the majority of people in La Danta make less than $2 per day. Most of the men of these families are either subsistence farmers or day laborers; they work off the land, harvesting corn and beans and raising cattle. The women have the full-time job of childcare, cooking, cleaning, and gathering water. The biggest challenges in La Danta all stem from the fact that it is extremely isolated. For 10 months out of the year, the community is inaccessible by vehicle. Transportation to get to the nearest town is always a challenge; this makes access to health care and other services very limited. Through the work of the nonprofit organization AMOS Health and Hope, the community has organized to work for its own health and development. Our team will be working closely with a Health Promoter from the community as well as with a community-designated Health Committee. Though our work is a short-term project, it is in service to the long-term goals identified by the community itself. Our projects are comprehensive, in that they help support the priorities of the community both before and after our engagement there. We are excited to partner again with AMOS and the people of La Danta, and we hope that you will partner with us in this important work!
