La Fortuna Orphanage Summer 2014
Organized by: Keren Page
The orphanage is a professionally-managed, well-run home for up to 17 infants, toddlers, and young children under the age of 10 who have been removed from their homes due to reasons such as malnutrition and neglect.
During our short time here, we developed close relationships with the orphans. In addition to playing with the children and helping the staff with daily responsibilities, we worked to improve the orphanage’s buildings and property by sanding and painting the front fence, re-varnishing the porch roof, and painting two huge colorful wall murals outside.
Our interactions with the orphans made us realize how fortunate we are. Living in a group home setting, the orphans are not privileged with the same sense of individuality to which each of us are accustomed. Consequently, we all left here with more appreciation for what we have-emotionally, educationally, physically, and materially. We also left with a desire to continue helping these orphans by sharing our excitement and experiences with those back home in hopes that we could raise money to send back to the orphanage.
Specifically, any money raised will go directly to the orphanage to help fund their building expansion project which will include the addition of more living space and a dance/art room. If you are interested in supporting the La Fortuna orphanage, please help us help them! Monetary donations of any amount will be helpful in making their vision come to life.
