LaGuardia HS 2013 Giving Tree

LAGUARDIA HIGH SCHOOL PARENTS ASSOCIATION INC's Photo

THE STORY:

At our 2013 Spring GaLa!, we had a "Giving Tree" with special studio and academic projects put together by our LaGuardia HS teachers which need funding. Since not everyone had a chance to attend the GaLa! we wanted to reach out and ask other folks to help us meet our goal. Let's show our LaGuardia teachers the LOVE and fund these projects! Donate today!

The projects are listed below. When you donate, please specify in the comments box which project (or projects!) you'd like to donate to and we will split your donation accordingly. And THANKS SO MUCH!

ART STUDIO

A WORK IN PROGRESS

Our art students have been hard at work, under the direction of muralist and Assistant Principal Nina Lasky, revitalizing the murals that are on display throughout the school.  Not only do our students gain the experience of collaborating on and executing these wonderful works of art, but our halls are beautified in the process.

Stunning and colorful murals covering a broad range of subjects on floors 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, and the Guidance Suite on 2 have been completed.  To keep this project going, more mural paints are needed.  While the school has been purchasing the paints, they can be quite expensive. So, please donate what you can for the purchase of these supplies.

DANCE STUDIO

“THERE IS A VITALITY, A LIFE FORCE, AN ENERGY, A QUICKENING THAT IS TRANSLATED THROUGH YOU INTO ACTION, AND BECAUSE THERE IS ONLY ONE OF YOU IN ALL TIME, THIS EXPRESSION IS UNIQUE.” –  MARTHA GRAHAM

Support our dance students with a donation to fund the choreographers guiding them through the final stages of this year’s performances and future dance projects.  Please show your appreciation for our talented students by supporting this need.

DRAMA & TECH STUDIOS

LET THERE BE LIGHT!

The lighting in the Black Box Theatre, which is where our drama students present their scenes, is minimal at best.  The situation could be drastically improved with the acquisition of wide angle lenses and additional luminar lighting fixtures.  This would be of benefit to our tech students, who light the drama scenes, as well as the drama students.  Don’t leave these students in the dark!  Please make a donation now!

MUSIC STUDIO

“A PAINTER PAINTS PICTURES ON CANVAS. BUT MUSICIANS PAINT THEIR PICTURES ON SILENCE.”  — LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI

Our LaGuardia musicians “paint” through a combination of practiced skill on their instruments, knowledge of what’s been done musically before, and learning the theoretically infinite possibilities of what can be done.  Our music students need music history texts and music theory review books to become complete musicians … specifically Music: An Appreciation by Roger Kamien and Barrons’s AP Music Theory.  Your contribution tonight can help the Music Studio buy these valuable books for our Music History and AP Music Theory students.

MATH DEPARTMENT

Y = 4 log7 X … CAN YOU SOLVE THIS PROBLEM?

LaGuardia’s advanced math students can … provided they are equipped with graphing calculators.  But each calculator costs $95 and 100 are needed.  You don’t need to be a mathematician to know that’s a challenging goal to meet.  Please give what you can to help the Math Department offer the tools needed by our advanced math students.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT REQUESTS SUPPORT FOR THREE SEPARATE PROJECTS:

ENG - Project I
Media Carts – The use of movies and instructional videos enhances students’ reviews of literature.  Our English Department needs to purchase two media carts equipped with TV’s and DVD players to make this possible.

ENG - Project II
A classroom set of The Elements of Style by Strunk & White has been requested by Ms. Johnson.  She reports “This book provides clear and concise usage information that will help improve student writing.  It is also incredibly readable which makes grammar instruction more appealing to the students.  It would greatly supplement my writing instruction.”

ENG - Project III
LaGuardia’s Dr. Rowes asks for 35 copies of Tolstoy’s A Calendar of Wisdom.  She writes “The book is expensive but worthwhile, and it introduces the children to the experiences of Tolstoy who influenced Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and Nelson Mandela in their thinking and transformation spiritually.”

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WITH DONATIONS FOR THESE NEEDS.

SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT

LaGuardia has students beginning college level Advanced Placement classes as early as Sophomore year with studies in World History.  Students are in need of Princeton’s AP World History Review books.  And all of our Social Studies classes request help in funding a supply of easel pads and Kraft paper for special projects.

P.E. / HEALTH DEPARTMENT

PUT A POSITIVE “SPIN” ON FITNESS.

The benefits of using a spin bike include improvement of cardiovascular health and maximization of the body’s fat burning ability while engaging in a safe, low-impact exercise.

LaGuardia’s P.E./Health Department wants to add a few spin bikes to the training room.  Please give generously so our students can be introduced to this efficient workout.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

The posture we use in sitting not only affects our comfort, but our concentration and functionality as well.

Due to limited space, our LaGuardia science labs serve the dual purpose of providing a place for lab work AND traditional science classes. Ms. Bodha, our
Assistant Principal, has discovered a lab stool that is the correct height for students working at the counters engaged in either lab experiments or note taking.
She requests your help to outfit the labs with 64 stools needed to make sure our students can work comfortably and efficiently.
