THE STORY:

Hello and thank you for visiting my page!

I never would have thought when I completed my first Hammerfest 2 years ago that I would be inspired to run the full Ironman distance (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run). I was not only inspired to push my body and mind to the limits but to make this journey about something more important than myself.

I have decided to not only raise money for the Ironman Foundation which donates to local nonprofits and charities within the race communities, but for Brian’s Hope and the Alzheimer’s Association as well. Both causes are near and dear to me; I have known Brian since Kindergarten and have been humbled to watch the Kelley’s efforts to raise awareness, support advances in research and promote newborn screening for ALD throughout my entire life. I have felt firsthand how Alzheimer’s can effect a family as it took my Grandmother, Margaret “Peggy” McGwire’s life almost 8 years ago. I am honored to finally participate in the fight for these causes and hope you will join me on my journey to fundraise and complete a full Ironman.

My total fundraising goal will be $10,000. I plan to allocate the money as follows: 35% to the Ironman Fund, 32.5% to Brian’s Hope, and 32.5% to the Alzheimer’s Association. Per the rules of the Ironman Fund Team, I must first complete my $3,500 commitment to the IMF before I can begin raising money for Brian’s Hope and the Alzheimer’s Association. At the end of the day, each dollar donated will be allocated the same way as I intend to go above and beyond my goal.

SPONSORSHIPS

For Individuals or companies who would like to become a sponsor of my journey, I will include your name and/or logo on my race jersey, on this page, and post a link or ad on my social media pages for you. The contribution minimum for a sponsorship is $500.

I am tentatively looking into potential Tech Tee Shirts for donors who contribute $50 or more.

Below I have included more detailed information on the Ironman Fund, Brian’s Hope and the Alzheimer’s Association.

Thank you for your support,

Tom

IRONMAN FOUNDATION

All money raised through the TEAM IMF program will benefit The IRONMAN Foundation, and specifically - the Community Fund Program. This program benefits those in the communities where IRONMAN events are held, by providing charitable support to a variety of local non-profit organizations that recognize citizens in need and provide support to the local community. Within those communities, The IRONMAN Foundation will provide grant funding opportunities to non-profit organizations, while also working with community leaders to identify projects that will benefit the community and provide funding to support those initiatives. The IRONMAN Foundation has provided funding opportunities of over $34 million dollars to numerous non-profit beneficiaries worldwide.

BRIAN'S HOPE

http://brianshope.org/

Brian’s Hope works to advocate for ALD awareness and research as well as legislation while providing support for those affected. Stopping the Progression of ALD: Our hope is that we will someday be able to keep every child with the potential for developing adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) well. Brian's Hope's mission is to fulfill three goals: to promote awareness of ALD, ensure genetic screening for all newborns and support advances in research. Early intervention is critical in order to stop ALD from advancing. The genetic marker has been identified, and screening is available. By making this test part of the recommended universal screening panel for newborns, we can identify any child with the potential for developing ALD so he can get the treatment he needs to stay well. Funding dollars are critical. Adrenoleukodystrophy research happens through private support. Currently, Brian’s Hope is funding a study being conducted at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, a center of excellence for ALD, to pursue an exciting, multi-stage research project targeting ALD.

ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION

http://www.alz.org/

Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States, and affects millions of people daily. More than 5 million Americans are living with the disease. Every 66 seconds someone develops Alzheimer's. Currently there is no cure. Founded in 1980, the mission of the Alzheimer's Association is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. The Alzheimer's Association is the largest private investor in innovative research related to Alzheimer's and related disorders, providing millions of dollars in research grants each year.  Over the last 30 years, researchers have made remarkable progress in understanding healthy brain function and what goes wrong in the disease. There are currently five FDA-approved Alzheimer's drugs that treat the symptoms of Alzheimer's -- but these medications do not treat the underlying causes and are not a cure.
