BENEFITING: Students Run America/Students Run L.A.
EVENT DATE: Mar 20, 2011
This is the second year I will be running the LA Marathon and this time my goal is to not only run 26.2 miles but to do it while helping a charitable cause. I've been thinking a lot about which charity I would most like to raise money for since there are so many worthy causes to choose from... On Sunday, February 8th that decision was easily made after one of my most inspiring and rewarding runs as a pacer for Students Run L.A. (SRLA) at the Friendship Run 18-miler. I ran with thousands of kids (grades 7-12) as they completed their final long run before the LA Marathon. Words can't describe how amazing it was to see the kids out there running, especially since it was their longest run ever for many of them.
SRLA is a non-profit organization that trains at-risk youth to complete the LA Marathon. The program has proven to be an innovative and effective dropout prevention and life skills program that challenges at-risk students to experience the benefits of goal setting, character development, adult mentoring and improved health. Today, the program has grown to more than 450 leaders and 3000 students from 175 schools and community programs across Greater Los Angeles. More than 45,000 students have been served, and the success of the program continues... Although many of these students are first-time runners, more than 95% complete the LA Marathon. And more than 95% of SRLA seniors graduate from high school, while the average graduation rate for LAUSD is only 62%.
Please join me in supporting SRLA to continue inspiring at-risk youth to achieve their dreams through a life-transforming experience: The training for, and completion of, the Honda LA Marathon.
For just $250 a student will receive a training shirt, a marathon uniform, running shoes, race entry fees, transportation to, and nutrition at, the races. Please help me reach my goal of sponsoring two students to achieve their dreams through this program. Let's make a difference together…
