BENEFITING: Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Inc.
The Lamps.com team didn’t set out in search of a charity. Although charitable giving had always been a large part of our corporate culture, our giving had been decentralized and without a guiding vision. After watching Scott Harrison’s presentation at Big Omaha, the Lamps.com team realized the difference that could be made by a charity with a quantifiable goal, dedicated following and streamlined structure.
charity: water is a non-profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations. They use 100% of public donations to directly fund sustainable water solutions in areas of greatest need.
Right now, almost a billion people on the planet don't have access to clean and safe drinking water. That's one in eight of us.
Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of diseases and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Children are especially vulnerable, as their bodies aren't strong enough to fight diarrhea, dysentery and other illnesses.
Realizing the difference that we could make not only as individuals, but as an organization, the Lamps.com team was motivated to help. We were determined to not only make charity: water, Lamps.com charity of choice, but to integrate into our site the capability for our customers to easily give and help as well. To that end, we developed an easy to use widget, providing a simple checkbox for our customers to donate to charity: water.
$5,000 is the average cost of a water project that can provide 250 people with access to clean, safe drinking water. At Lamps.com, we are excited to see the first water project built. To get a head start on reaching our goal of $5,000, Lamps.com has pledged $2,500 towards the project, which will be added to the donations to match our customers' generosity.
