The Larry Monroe Forever Bridge
Organized by: Ave Bonar
EVENT DATE Mar 01, 2015
Larry Monroe was a beloved musicologist. Broadcasting since age 14, his radio career in Austin spanned 36 years, with such iconic programs as Blue Monday, Phil Music, and Texas Radio Live, the last still ongoing at Guero’s Oak Garden every Wednesday night from 6-8 pm.
While Larry was knowledgeable about many genres of music, his specialty was Austin and Texas singer-songwriters, and he never stopped promoting them. Larry is one of the reasons Austin is known as the Live Music Capital of the World.
When he died on January 17, 2014, Austin lost one of its most important champions for Austin and Texas musicians. He was a DJ dedicated to his listeners more than any other.
To honor his life, friends came up with ideas for ways to permanently and publicly honor Larry for his considerable contributions to Austin’s music culture. There was talk of a statue, and there was talk of a bench. In the end there will be The Larry Monroe Forever Bridge, which the Austin Arts Commission and City of Austin unanimously approved in December.
Larry’s partner, Ave Bonar, and mosaic artist Stefanie Distefano are leading a revolving team of volunteers to create ceramic tiles for a mosaic artwork to be installed on a charming little bridge located on Eastside Drive, just north of Monroe Street, between Big Stacy and Little Stacy Parks in South Austin’s Travis Heights, near where Larry once lived.
This is a community project by and for the people of Austin, and you are invited to help make the tiles and put the mosaic together. If you think you don’t know how, you’ll be in good hands. Stefanie Distefano is an excellent teacher, and being in her studio is a real treat.
Everyone who donates to The Larry Monroe Forever Bridge will be offered a tile with his or her name on it included in the mosaic. Your name on the tile will be the name you choose for the donor roll of this website.
If you prefer to mail a check, make it to “Ave Bonar” and send to Ave Bonar at P.O. Box 3223, Austin, TX 78764.
