EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
Last year The Last Call Foundation gave me the amazing opportunity to accomplish my goal of completing the Boston Marathon. With all the support from friends and family I was able to raise just over $8,400 for this increadible charity. After experiencing this unforgetable day, I have felt compelled to continue my support of such a wonderful cause.
Almost 8 years ago my family and I suffered a tragic loss with the passing of my dad, known to most as Rinaldo, to cancer. My dad was one of the most influential people in my life, always putting other people before himself, which is why he was and always will be my hero. While trying to deal with the pain of his passing I found myself out on the road, running, something I always hated to do. It was out on the streets I found myself having more clarity and peace with my dad not being here anymore and realized the greater good that could come out of this hardship.
Growing up just a few miles from the start to the Boston Marathon I remember being there to cheer on all the runners as they set out on a journey to achieve their goal of crossing the finish line. Since running has become such an integral part of my life these days, this too has become my dream. I will be once again be running as part of The Last Call Foundation, a local charity set out to provide funding, education and research to advance the safety needs of the Boston firefighting community. With a special focus to fund cancer awareness, the Last Call Foundation holds a special place in my heart. Cancer is a leading cause of death for America's firefighters. Cancer caused 60% of line-of-duty deaths for career firefighters from 2002-2014, according to International Association of Fire Fighters data. For Boston firefighters the statistics are even more startling: 67% of their line-of-duty deaths were caused by cancer during the same period. Just as my dad is my personal hero, our local firefighters are heroes each and every day to everyone in their community.
As I set out on this journey again I am determined to meet the requirements of the Boston Athletic Association and raise $7,500 to be donated to the Last Call Foundation. Please consider contributing to this great cause to support our heroes. I greatly appreciate all donations and thank you in advance.
The Organization plans to establish a permanent memorial to Lieutenant Edward Walsh and Firefighter Michael Ryan Kennedy within the Engine 33 Ladder 15 district. Such a memorial would serve as a permanent remembrance of these courageous firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty. It will ensure that these brave men are never forgotten. The memorial aims to provide a reminder to the public of the sacrifices made by these men and women, and remind the public
Every firefighter is a hero every day.
