Last Mile4D Maternal Health
Organized by: Audrey Bracey Deegan
Every 2 minutes a woman dies from complications related to childbirth. In most cases, these deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa; most are preventable. We know that an attended birth with a properly trained attendant equipped with the right diagnostic and treatment tools can reduce maternal mortality and morbidity.
Last Mile4D can provide health practitioners with those tools-- basic solar-powered mobile natal kits and training that can help birth attendants and the health practitioners that support them provide real time health services in the field. These mobile natal kits (“Mobikits”) are backpacks with solar units (panels, inverters, chargers, cables), LED lights, a computer, mobile doppler, mobile incubator, and sterile materials that allow birth attendants to diagnose and treat mothers and their babies. In some cases, they can even facilitate telemedicine.
We have enlisted the help of global health programs at several universities, offering to provide their global health students with Mobikits to use in the field during thieir practicum in exchange for their feedback on the effectiveness and efficacy as well as the “fit for purpose” and “fit for condition” attributes of the kits in the field.
Now to get Mobikits into the hands of as many global health students as possible so they can reach as many women as possible.
That is where you come in…. Help us fund Mobikits for global health students throughout Africa. We are shoooting to puts a Mobikit in the hands of 40 health professionals who can use it to treat as well as to train.
Join together with your friends, sorority sisters, co-workers, family or even strangers committed to the cause of making birth a cause for joy instead of tragedy. Donate to fund a Mobikit… or two. Consider asking for a Mobikit contribution for your next birthday or register a Mobikit for your baby shower. Share your joy with another birthday baby!
Thanks in advance for your help!
