Our journey began with our son Robert Desmond when Melissa was 20 weeks pregnant, the point in time where we learned that her pregnancy would not be normal. Our son was behind in his growth and was in trouble with his heart, lungs and kidney. A most terrifying moment and furthermore, not knowing what the future would hold for our son. Our baby boy was in danger and we felt powerless to help him. Thus began a journey that involved frequent visits with the High Risk doctors, regular monitoring from the pediatric cardiologists, and Melissa being relegated to a hospital bed for almost a month with a fetal heart monitor stuck to her belly.
Born at 30 weeks, Robert was very critical weighing only 1 pound 14 ounces, requiring breathing assistance almost immediately. For being a “micro preemie,” our son was the strongest person I had ever known and stubborn too. He coded multiple times, self-extubated, and endured multiple surgeries including his heart. Robert never followed the rules, responding to treatments the way he wanted to, making everyone subject to his will. Our little man was full of fire and though his little body gave up at seven and a half months old, his spirit never did. He touched every person he came in contact with from his primary nurses, to his respiratory therapists, from his doctors and specialists, to his family, from those near and so many a far. He will forever live in our hearts.
