LA SED (Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development) is considered by South West Detroit residents as a pillar of a community weaved together by thousands of people of very diverse origins; all hoping to interlace their destiny in the ever promising city of Detroit.
LA SED is located in the center of Southwest community and in front of Cark Park. Since 1965 it has opened its doors from Monday through Friday (and many times weekeds as well) from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM to provide advocacy and information to educate the community on all sorts of topics that impact its life.
CARING FOR SENIORS: OUR LIVING LEGACY
LA SED Senior Services is the Gold standard of care in SW Detroit. Altogether these services provide a holistic approach to Senior needs. It includes nutritional, physical, mental, social, and intellectual wellness options for residents who are 64 years of age or older.
Seniors are asked to register into the program in order to best serve their needs. An interiew allows for staff to understand any wellness concern that needs to be addressed; from diet and medication, to transportation and social environment, each senior is cared for as a family member.
Doors open at 8:00 AM for morning coffee. The first activity block begins by 9:00, when one of the dedicated wellness instructors provide an hour of physical actiity that includes yoga, ZUMBA Gold, and chair exercises. By 10:00 AM seniors participate in different actities that promote their social, mental, and intellectual wellness. A running calendar itegrates Language classes with workshops and lectures, as well as craft lessons for all.
Hot lunch is served at 12:00 PM. For many of the seniors in the program, this is the only hot meal available to them. The menu has been designed to meet the most common nutritional needs of the group; such as low sodium, and low sugar options. LA SED serves more than 10 thousand hot lunches to seniors within a year's cycle.
LA SED celebrates the life of each senior highligting birthdays, anniversaries, and calendar dates (Valentine's, Grandparents' Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas). Once a month it also provides shopping trips to grocery shops and field trips to all sorts of events such as visits to the Detroit Institute of Arts, Tigers Games, etc.
