EVENT: Honda LA Marathon 2012
Public Schools have taken a hit over the last 4 years. Per Pupil Funding has gone from nearly $10,000 per student to a little more than $7,000 per student. That's a big hit to public education. Los Angeles Teacher Prep spends almost every penny on salaries and teachers put in quite a bit of their money to purchase supplies for the classroom (paper, pens, markers, flash cards, etc...) out of their own pocket. Most studies show inner city, underprivileged kids need more school time to catch up to their more privileged counterparts. Our school keeps its doors open way past the bell Monday through Friday and opens the doors on Saturdays so students can get the extra help they need. Providing students nutritional snacks on those days is done out of pocket as well. Finally, as a teacher preparatory high school, we would like to be able to offer our own small scholarship to deserving students to pursue an education leading to a career in the teaching field. We need these students to come back to their neighborhoods and give back to their communities as teachers/leaders.
